View all | Close all
1. What is Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement)?
We are required by IRS Section 1.65050S-1 to send Form 1098-T to students who had payments made to their account for qualified tuition and/or fees during the calendar year 2009. The form is used to assist the IRS and students in determining if students are qualified for education-related tax benefits.
2. Will I receive a 1098-T form this year?
If Kaplan received payments towards your account for qualified tuition and/or fees during 2009, you should receive a 1098T form.
3. When will I receive my 1098T form?
1098T forms are mailed to students during the forth week of January. The information on Form 1098-T was prepared by Kaplan Higher Education using the financial information and address as it appears in your school’s student information system. If you have moved in the past year, please verify your address with your college’s business office.
4. If I receive Form 1098-T, does that mean that I qualify for the Hope Scholarship, Lifetime Learning Credits or other tax benefits?
Not necessarily. Kaplan Higher Education is required to provide Form 1098-T to individuals who made payments for qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year 2009.
5. How do I determine which expenses will qualify for the Hope Scholarship, Lifetime Learning Credits, or other tax benefits?
We cannot legally provide tax advice concerning how to use your form when you are filing your tax return. Please consult with the IRS or a qualified tax preparer if you have questions concerning how to use this form on your taxes.
6. If I am a nonresident alien, will I receive a Form 1098-T?
A nonresident alien should not receive Form 1098-T since a nonresident alien is generally not eligible to claim either the Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Credit. Certain nonresident aliens who are married to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens and who qualify to file a joint-income tax return, may, in some cases qualify to claim the credits.
7. What do the amounts located on the form represent?
- Box 1 represents the amount of payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses for any source during 2009. The amount reported is the total amount of payments received less any reimbursements or refunds made during 2009.
- Box 2 amounts billed are not reports.
- Box 4 represents amount of reimbursements or refunds for qualified tuition and related expenses made during 2009 that relate to payments received that were reported for a prior year.
- Box 5 represents the total amount of scholarships or grants that were processed during 2009 for the payment of qualified tuition and related expenses.
- Box 6 represents the amount of reductions or refunds made in 2009 for scholarships or grants that were reported for a prior year.
- Box 8 is only checked if you have been at least a half-time student (6 credit hours) for at least one academic period that began during the calendar year of 2009.
- Box 9 is checked if you were enrolled in a program of a graduate-level degree during 2009.
8. Why does the 1098-T form show payments instead of amounts billed?
Eligible educational institutions may choose to report payments received or amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses. Kaplan Higher Education reports the payments received for qualified tuition and fees as of 2009.
9. What if I didn't get a 1098-T? What if the information on my 1098-T is incorrect?
If you enrolled in courses during the 2009 calendar year and made payments for qualified tuition and fees but did not receive a form, please verify the address your college’s business office has on file. If your form was not mailed to an older address, or the information on the form is incorrect, contact the 1098T help line.
